Hydraton® is a low-permeability, thin capping material that resembles ordinary stone aggregates and can be constructed using manual labor or simple standard machinery, eliminating the need for mechanical compaction. Once hydrated, it attains a dense state.
Hydraton® is a patented, composite-aggregate technology resembling small stones and typically comprised of a dense aggregate core, clay or clay-sized materials, and polymers. For typical freshwater product formulations, Hydraton’s clay (sealant) component consists largely of bentonite clay. However, other clay minerals or clay-sized materials can be incorporated to meet project-specific needs, including product use in marine environments. Other technology parameters (particle size, relative clay content, etc.) can also be modified as appropriate.
Think of spot treatment over a liner like placing a band-aid – allow for enough Hydraton so that the dimension of the blanket of product extends beyond the breach by at least one foot in all directions.
Direct contact with the compromised liner material is recommended (i.e. cover soils should be removed prior to application). Vacuuming or pressure washing are both effective methods provided they can be accomplished without further compromising the geomembrane.
More gentle slopes (e.g. 4:1 or less) are simpler to seal than steeper slopes (e.g. 3:1 or steeper). The texture of the geomembrane and the length of the slope will influence stability. Slope length and pitch will need to be addressed in final design. If you have questions relating to stability on slopes contact Hydraton or talk to a distributor near you.
Cover media (e.g. sand, soil, stone) on the toe of the slope and atop the Hydraton adds ballast and can contribute to overall stability. An armor layer can also provide erosion protection (from wind and ice) and provide site safety and visual appeal.
